INSTITUTE’S EXPERIMENTAL FARM

Head: Sławomir Petrykowski, s.petrykowski@igbzpan.pl , tel. +48 22 736-71-61

The Experimental Farm is an integral part of the Institute, employs a total of 31 persons and farms on 380 ha of arable land and 140 ha of grassland. It consists of three farms: Jastrzębiec, Kosów and Jeżewice.

The principal goal of the Experimental Farm is the maintenance of farm animals necessary for experiments and observations conducted at the Institute. The Farm maintains a herd of 120 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows, a flock of 60 dairy goats of the Polish White Improved, and Polish Coloured Improved. Besides, the Farm owns a flock of Japanese quail (around 700 birds). A rabbit farm numbers 200 Popielno White animals. This breed was created at the Polish Academy of Sciences Experimental Farm in Popielno, and as a local breed is included in a preserve breeding programme and is under the supervision of the National Animal Breeding Centre. Moreover, the Institute Farm owns 10 Hutzul horses, which are included in a preserve breeding programme for this breed. For behavioural experiments seven dogs in the type of German Sheepdog are also maintained.

Finally, the Institute has a large, modern animal facility for laboratory animals.
